Google SketchUp: Free 3D modeling software

By Joel 'Jaykul' Bennett on 27-Apr-2006

I’m starting to feel like my software and news categories need special Google sub-categories …

Google released today a free version of the 3D modeling program SketchUp for personal use.

SketchUp Pro ($495) was created by @Last software, which Google acquired last March, and it supports all sorts of 3D modelling, including advance terrain generation, “soft” sketch-like rendering, printing and exporting at higher than screen resolution, exporting to the usual 3D formats, creating walkthroughs in movie formats, ruby scripting, and more …

Google SketchUp (the free version) has only a fraction of those features and is licensed only for personal use. The big restriction, of course, is that only exports to Google Earth. The idea is to get hobbyist around the world to create 3D models of … well, hopefully of your house, workplace, etc., and then place them in Google Earth and post them publically so that other’s can see your rendition of your house … and Google can get more content for free ;-)

About Huddled Masses

This is web site is dedicated to the musings of Joel Bennett (aka Jaykul) about technology, software, software development, the web, and the world.

Any resemblance of the views expressed and the views of my employer, my terminal, or the view out my window are purely coincidental. The resemblance between them and my own views is non-deterministic. The question of the existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is left as an exercise for the reader.

P.S.: I occasionally link to things I think are great. When I do, I occasionally find a "referral code" so I can make a little cash. I promise that I don't link to anything just because of that cash (I wouldn't cross the street for the amount of cash those links bring in, never mind write a whole blog post) ... but I do not promise that things I link to will stay great as time passes, nor that you will agree with me about their greatness!
